The word “yamawarau” is a season word used in a haiku composed late in spring for expressing a fine scenery of relatively low mountain which is covered with fresh leaves and buds of various trees and which looks like smiling faces of people.

昨夜の雨たたへ一八二輪咲く

(Note)

In Japanese, "wear (湛える)" and "praise (称える)" are homonyms having the same pronunciation "tataeru".

Therefore, it is possible to translate the haiku in either meaning when hiragana (ひらがな) is used instead of kanji (漢字) for "tataeru".

The word "natsubi" means a summer-like hot day whose highest temperature is 25°C or more and less than 30°C.

Buson composed this haiku when he visited Amanohashidate.

The onomatopoetic word “notari notari” is uniquely impressive expression of calm sea-waves in the spring.

(Note)

The admiration by the postpositional particle “や(ya)” in the original haiku is expressed by adding the adverb “amazingly” in the above translation.

It is said that Bashō composed this haiku while he was ill in bed in his hermitage, watching the roof of Sensoji in Asakusa.

(Note)

I assume that Bashō omitted real subuject (Bashō himself) in this haiku.

Accordingly, in this translation, the subject "I am" is omitted after the word "while" in the subordinate clause.
