芭蕉300句の英訳チャレンジ：「青柳」（1２/300）

   

　・青柳の泥にしだるる潮干かな

   (aoyagino doronishidaruru shiohikana)

 

       (A)

        the green willow trees

        are dripping into the mud

now the tide is out

 

      (B)

       the ebb tide_

       green branches of the willow

       drooping to the mud

（A）はホワイト氏訳ですが、5-7-5音節に拘り、原句の句意が正確に翻訳されていません。（B）と（C）は L.P. Loveeの素直な英訳ですが、「潮干」と「青柳」のどちらを先に芭蕉が認識したかの違いを語順で表しています。音節は3-6-5と6-5-3ですが、いずれも（A)よりも俳句らしい簡潔なリズムになっていると思います。

なお、今後は「575 The haiku of Basho」掲載のホワイト氏の翻訳を「575訳」と略称します。
