last-year-this-year

(Note)

“kozokotoshi” is a kigo (= season word made by Kyoshi Takahama) referring to New Year, since on the first day of January, yesterday is the last year, whereas today is this year.

Kyoshi's famous haiku in question "kozokotoshi tsuranukubohno gotokimono" is translated by L. P. Lovee as follows:

(Literal translation)

kozokotoshi_

something piercing

like a stick

(Translations reflecting Kyoshi's intention as assumed by L. P. Lovee)

(A)

my belief in HAIKU

pierces last-year-this-year through,

like a stick piercing something

(B)

time passes

piercing kozokotoshi

like a stick

It seems that Kyoshi intended to express two meanings by omitting the subject in the Japanese original haiku in question.

To really appreciate Kyoshis Haiku, it is essential for a reader to understand the original haiku in Japanese.
